In the Dominican Republic, there is a Film Law, which was passed in 2010. The purpose of this law is to promote and regulate the production and dissemination of cinematographic works in the country.

The following are some of the most outstanding impacts that this Law has had on Dominican Cinema:

Promotion of film production

The Law establishes a fund for the promotion of film production, which is financed by a percentage of the income tax paid by companies that invest in advertising. This fund has allowed more films to be made in the country and has contributed to the growth of the film industry.

Establishment of tax incentives

The Law establishes a series of tax incentives for companies that invest in film production in the country. These incentives include tax exemptions, tax credits and the reimbursement of 25% of production expenses.

Promotion of Dominican cinema

The law establishes that at least 10% of the country’s movie theaters must show films produced in the Dominican Republic. This has allowed the public to have access to a greater number of Dominican films, and has contributed to the promotion of national cinema.

Job creation

The growth of the film industry has generated employment in the country, both in film production and in other related sectors, such as advertising and tourism.

In the Dominican Republic, there is also a Cultural Patronage Law, known as the Cultural Incentive Law. This was approved in 2012 and aims to promote cultural and artistic patronage in the country.

Encouraging private investment in culture

The Law establishes a legal framework for private investment in cultural and artistic projects, which has allowed companies and individuals to become involved in the financing of cultural and artistic initiatives, and has contributed to the promotion of culture and the arts in the country.

Tax incentives for sponsors

The Law establishes a series of tax incentives for companies and individuals who invest in cultural and artistic projects, including tax deductions of up to 100% of the amount invested.

Establishment of a National Cultural Patronage Fund.

The Law establishes the creation of a National Cultural Patronage Fund to finance cultural and artistic projects throughout the country.

Promotion of cultural heritage

The Law establishes the promotion and protection of the country’s cultural heritage, encouraging private investment in the preservation of cultural property and historical monuments.

Promotion of creativity and cultural entrepreneurship

The Law promotes creativity and cultural and artistic entrepreneurship, encouraging private investment in innovative and creative projects.
